Ian Simpson, Heritage Officer at the Diocese of Liverpool has been working hard to encourage churches across the diocese to open their doors for Heritage Open Days which is taking place between Thursday 8th and Sunday 11th September.
The 31 churches between them are a hugely diverse selection of church buildings, representing a range of periods and architectural styles, containing a fascinating array of historical treasures and telling some remarkable stories. As Ian explains ‘they are all living places of worship and service at the heart of their parishes, though, and all have to manage the tension between their status as historic listed buildings on the one hand with their mission on the other’.
The national Heritage Open Days website gives full details of all the events which have been registered.
Ian has also produced a book entitled Liverpool Churches which are open for HODs 2016 providing more information specifically about all the Liverpool churches that will be open plus details of the special events and activities that are being organised.
There are absolutely wonderful buildings to be found and importantly, some of these aren’t open very often so now is your chance.
Ian is going to be on Radio Merseyside advertising the event. And you can also watch an interview he did on Bay TV Liverpool’s Faith Matters Programme on 14th August talking with Revd Keith Hitchman about churches, heritage and faith.
